Cara raised her sleepy head from the passenger window. She recollected the last few hours as though it had been a dream. Upon entering his cottage, Ray had laid her down on the bed. He had left her and returned straight away with a first aid kit. Ever the practical horseman, she had thought. Ray had cleaned the wound out with disinfectant and covered it in gauze.

“Won’t need stitches at least.” He said. “You get to keep your pretty face.”

“You think I’m pretty?” She murmured. He had grunted, obviously not in the mood for jokes. He grabbed his jacket off the stand.

“Where are you going?” Cara asked, anxiously.

Ray leaned down to kiss her forehead. “Back soon.”

She had dozed off, and later there had been the sensation of strong arms carrying her. Now she was in a truck. Ray’s truck. They were zooming down the motorway in the dark of night. She turned sleepily to Ray.

“What about the horses? You can’t leave. What about Shadow?”

Ray looked at her like she was from outer space. “You’re my first priority, Cara. Do you think I stayed at Claremont for the swag accommodation?”

Cara gave him a baffled look.

“Yes?”

Ray shook his head in amazement. “Don’t worry about the horses. I’ve advised Gerard that I’ll be taking a leave of absence.”

“Where are we going, Ray?” Cara asked.

“North.” He said. “To my home in Salford. Where he can’t reach you.”

She had thought Ray was a drifter when he had strolled back into her life. That had been naive. Of course he had a home other than her own. Why hadn’t she asked him more about the past eighteen years? Because she was a spoiled, self-centred brat, that’s why. Cara sunk into the car seat and wallowed in self-loathing. She didn’t deserve this treatment from Ray. He was too good for her.
